“In the Shadow of Rome”

Rhodema’s upcoming collection, In the Shadow of Rome: Ten Stories of Children Who Met Jesus, is a middle-grade historical fiction book with ten interconnected stories from the gospels. Events are seen through the eyes of children who encountered Jesus. Young people readily drew near to Christ, recognizing his compassion for them. When Jesus made the bold statement that we all should approach him as a little child, he knew they were free of pretense or prejudice and they took Christ’s words to heart with a simple faith.

In the Shadow of Rome, begins with a young shepherd boy who hears the angels on the night Christ was born and ends with a young Levite who witnesses the temple veil rip at the moment Christ dies. Throughout the book, young readers will encounter boys and girls who struggle daily alongside their families under the rule of Rome but once they encounter Jesus, life changes forever. The book offers a window into the rich culture of New Testament times and readers young and old will get a sense of living in the time of Christ.

About Rhodema

Rhodema Cargill is a world traveller who loves to tell stories. During a recent visit to Israel she realized that she was returning home with a richer understanding of scripture because she had walked where Jesus walked and saw the land much as he had seen it.

Sheep scurrying over hillsides would always come to mind when reading about the birth of Christ or David as a young shepherd. Winding through Hezekiah’s tunnel deep underground to come out at the pool of Siloam made her recall the moment Christ healed a blind man on that very spot. After seeing an ancient stone olive press, her visit to Gethsemane caused her to feel more of the emotional impact of Christ’s last night with his disciples.

Besides being an author and storyteller, Rhodema has been an educator and Sunday school teacher to middle schoolers. She is a mother to four grown children and Nonna to five grandchildren. It is often with these children in mind, she writes and shares her stories. Rhodema lives in Texas with her husband and two collies.
